Why people get taken advantage of

Injury victims who receive structured settlement payments are often solicited by the big "cash now" companies offering a lump sum in exchange for future payments. Those future payments were set up to provide income and financial security for years to come. Selling them can mean accepting far less than they're worth — and once they're sold, they're gone.

See the problem for yourself

John Oliver's Last Week Tonight examined how "cash now" companies target structured settlement recipients and the abuses that follow. It's worth watching.

Questions to ask before you sign anything

  • How much will I receive today, and how much in future payments am I giving up in total?
  • What discount rate is the buyer effectively charging me?
  • Am I selling all of my payments, or only some of them?
  • What fees, costs, or charges come out of the amount I'm offered?
  • Have I gotten quotes from more than one reputable company?
  • How will I cover the expenses those future payments were meant to pay for?

Consider the alternatives

Selling isn't the only way to handle a financial need. When we meet with you, we discuss alternative options and help you understand the true financial implications of selling your future payments, so you can make an educated decision.

A judge has to approve the sale

State Structured Settlement Protection Acts generally require a court to approve the transfer of structured settlement payments. Judges look at whether the proposed sale is in your best interest. Courts regularly appoint our team in a guardian ad Litem capacity to advise on exactly that question.

If you still decide to sell

That's your choice. If, after meeting with us, you still want to sell, we'll request quotes from reputable companies to make sure you aren't taken advantage of and that you end up with the best possible outcome.
